Tips for old lenses - all models

A couple of tips for old plastic lenses -

1 - Do your old lenses have fine shallow cracks? - especially front turn signal lenses when they are in the sun.

Paint them with liquid glue, such as Testor's plastic glue (I actually suspect that it is acetone) This will seal many of the cracks as it melts the plastic.

DO NOT Play with the glue as it sets, just paint them with a nice wet once over and let the glue dry for several hours. Then touch up spots that did not seal

2 - Check the lenses to see if they glue that holds them to the reflector has come loose - repair as necessary.

It is not much fun to get out of your Brick after a trip on the highway and find that one of your lenses is gone!

Add your tips.

In addition to this repair, try installing the thick plastic lens protectors. Not only do they prevent UV damage but they take the brunt of sand and road crud. The good ones are not cheap but they are effective. You can buy generic kits that are cut-to-fit.

Thx to you and to Old Duke. I will look for both products. Duke, is that the name for buying it?
I've used Shoe Goo, and also similar "Goop" from Home depot for patching together broken lenses, filling/sealing small holes, and for adhering lenses to light fixtures around the edges. Both seem to have an acetone or ketone solvent. I wear disposable gloves and a charcoal filter respirator for the dangerous VOCs.

hi dogs r- yes the name of the glue is seal all and it is in a yellow tube. is very effective and does have the methyl ketone smell. dont inhale it. it is very effective , lasting and sets up very quickly so have everything and your plan ready. have used it on a variety of automotive and other surfaces. hardware stores have it in their glues aisle. good luck. regardds oldduke

hi james- i think testors would work well. used to use that in 58 to assemble my plastic p 51 , 49 ford and 31 model A models . however on my plastic repairs on the 92 240 which are getting increasingly numerous, i have been using clear seal all in the yellow tube from the hardware store. its very strong and permanent. will try the testors too. thanks tons oldduke
