Blower motor always on low (1) 200 1983

Hello Guys and Gals,

1983 240 with dial (on/off) for a/c unit.

I had my a/c updated to R132 last summer at a shop.
They put in all new parts, hoses, compressor etc.
Car was parked during the winter (my choice).
Yesterday I realized that the blower motor is always blowing
at level 1, while the key is on. I did confirm that
the dial is "clicked" off (btw why is it so difficult
to "click" on/off?)

Would it be okay to update to a blue switch to replace the dial?
And is it possible?

Yesterday I went to the shop to question this but after
10 years the guy retired.

And advice would be appreciated?

Joseph in New Mexico

FIXED: Blower motor always on low (1) 200 1983

Thanks guys for all the advice.
At the pull and pay I could not find
a newer 240 with the snowflake switch.
I pulled an older style dial and it
    clicked correctly and smoothly. I
replace the one in my 1983 with this
    newer one and it worked.
    You guys rock as always.

    Cheers from New Mexico.

    Thank you BP.
    Thank you AB.
I will pull a snowflake switch at the p&p this weekend before I open up the console.

1/2 price weekend at the P&P coming up.

In my experience, the panel nut that fastens the thermo switch can loosen and when you turn the dial CCW to the off position it turns the entire switch ever so slightly and it may feel like it clicked off but it is still on.

You can do a visual check. Pop out the blank imediately to the right of the a/c/switch. Turn the knob to the off position. There is a metal tab that should move forward when completely off. If that's not happening then it's not turning off, no matter how it feels.

You should be able to tighten the switch. I believe you will need to loosen and pull back the center console to accomplish that. What to do should be obvious once you get in there.

It's worth checking before seeking other remedies.

Yes, this is right. In the 83's version, the low speed blower is switched by the "sidecar" Microswitch -- the snap action switch added to the side of the thermostatic control. The metal tab at the side of the thermostat actuates the Microswitch. It functions a bit differently from the function of the '89 in my writeup (showing the switch being replaced by the blue snowflake switch).

      Look for a broken Microswitch?

It is all in the make, model, and year...

        Hi Art,
As you probably know the "sidecar" microswitch's metal tab can be bent a bit using a pair of needle nose pliers.
By bending the metal tab, the blower motor level 1 switch can be altered.

Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with volvo people.

In your year, 83, the AC knob should shut the low speed off, but they break such that it won't turn off. I think you guessed this...

Women sometimes make fools of men, but most guys are the do-it-yourself type.
