How to remove headrest hardware from seat back 120-130

I have a couple of seats with trashed seat backs from a 1968 and want to swap the headrests/hardware into another pair of seat backs.
Unscrewing the knurled knob, I can remove the headrest, and the knob and lock sleeve, but I don't know how to remove the remaining hardware from the seat back. There appears to be an inner sleeve that is swaged (?) to a piece of plastic. Does this just pull out of the tube in the seat back? If so what is the best way to remove?

Anybody done this?

thanks

Although you have a very nice description of how to retrofit headrests, etc. this does not answer my question.

This doesn't answer it either but why not just change the newer/better/correct colour seat cover over to the frame that has the tubes etc already fitted. You could replace the lumbar support webbing at the same time.

          Danny;

If pictures of the Seatback internals, including exploded assembly diagram of Headrest tube don't help, I don't know what else I can do for you...

          Good Hunting!

With the plastic nut removed, push the metal tube up and then out of the black plastic bushing while pushing down slightly on the black plastic bushing.

Then from the underside of the metal bracket, gently squeeze the 4 flexible fingers on the end of the black plastic bushing while pulling up on the top of the black plastic bushing.

If you break the bushing, new ones are available.

              many thanks Eric

I'll be trying this when I get back to where I have the seats. I'm trying to remove the additional hardware from intact (not disassembled) seat backs - the vinyl covers and foam are in place. Is this possible or do I have to remove everything?

"With the plastic nut removed, push the metal tube up and then out of the black plastic bushing while pushing down slightly on the black plastic bushing."

By black plastic nut, do you mean the knurled nut that you tighten to adjust the height of the headrest?

In order to push the metal tube up, does the vinyl and foam have to be removed?

"Then from the underside of the metal bracket, gently squeeze the 4 flexible fingers on the end of the black plastic bushing while pulling up on the top of the black plastic bushing."

From the sound of this, the seat cover and foam have to be removed to gain access to the bottom end of the black plastic bushing. Am I wrong?

"Is this possible or do I have to remove everything?"

No, you shouldn't have to remove the upholstery (see below).

"By black plastic nut, do you mean the knurled nut that you tighten to adjust the height of the headrest?"

No, after removing the headrest, adjusting nut and small locking ring, there is an additional knurled nut. I forgot to mention there is also a large plastic washer under the second nut.

"In order to push the metal tube up, does the vinyl and foam have to be removed?"

No, you can remove the hog rings at the bottom of the seat cushion and reach inside.

"From the sound of this, the seat cover and foam have to be removed to gain access to the bottom end of the black plastic bushing. Am I wrong?"

                Yes.
