M41 Overdrive Ball Bearing in Oil Strainer Housing 1800 1965

Hello all,

I have a D type OD that I am putting back together.

When I pulled out the oil strainer there was a ball bearing stuck to all the gunk on the bottom. As there is a little hole there, I did not think much of it. But now that I am putting it all back together, it seems that there is nothing that holds the ball in place, as the metal ring and spacers for the strainer do not seem to cover up the hole.

Any ideas? Am I missing a washer to hold it in place?

Please see attached image.

Thanks,
Devin

I am pretty sure that ball bearing is a plug and should be peened in place so as long as its not loose you are okay.

M41 Oil in Shift Extender? 1800 1965

Another random question- do we top up oil in the gear shift extender? When I took it apart it was full of oil/grease at seemed like it had not ever been changed.

There is no need for oil to be in there and in fact I have several customers that have excess oil building up in that area that leaks past the stamped metal plug on the end of the shift cover.

I currently having my machinist modifying some P1800S shift covers with a seal in the front of the 2 piece housing.

The later shift covers used on 1800E/ES, 140 and 164 Volvos have a replaceable seal in the same area so I am having something similar done.

Well it came out with the oil filter, I just dropped it back in. So I do not think much is holding it in place. Looks like there is an indent for a washer, maybe pressure built up and blasted it out? Though I have not heard or seen the washer floating around in there.

There isn't supposed to be a washer.

If you look on the bottom of the main case near the 3 plugs, you will see a couple of the same ball bearings peened in as plugs.

I have never attempted to fix 1, but that is because I have a small pile of cores.

You can try to fix it, but you do take the risk of having to go back in if you can't get it to stay plugged.

Good luck,

FYI, for some reason, you picture disappeared.

It was there as I saw it earlier.

"...Looks like there is an indent for a washer..."

In some cases like this there is a thin brass ring pressed into the top of the hole that keep the ball in place. My guess is that's the purpose of the recessed shoulder. Plus the shoulder controls how deep a retainer ring would seat. Hmm, you may want to be careful how you retain the ball in place - like is there any possibility the ball needs to be able to float up and down a bit, like in a check valve? What's down in the hole? Just playing devil's advocate here before you you close it up.
