1993 940 T horn intermittent, a tap on the top of column brings it back

I have a 1993 940T and among other electrical gremlins, the horn is very intermittent but, when I beat on the top of the plastic piece between the steering wheel and the dash, and it will start working again. It is obviously a bad connection in the steering column but, I'm not sure what to do about it. So, if I remove the - battery connector, then I can't accidentally dump the airbag?

I checked the FAQ and didn't see anything about the column horn connection. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Possibly the problem is due to a bad ground path from the column to the dash structure - a common problem on the 700/900 cars. If you firmly grasp the steering wheel and try to shake the whole steering wheel/column structure side-to-side can you detect any looseness?

If you remove the drivers knee bolster from under the column it will expose the two snap-head bolts that keep the column firmly clamped to the dash structure. In order to tighten things up you have to drill out / easy-out the snap head bolts and replace them with regular hex head bolts. NOTE: When this happened to me I was warned to remove ONLY ONE OLD BOLT and replace it with the hex head bolt before removing the second old bolt. Apparently there is piece that lays over the top of the column that will fall out of place if you remove both bolts before screwing the new ones in. I'm not sure if that's true but that's the way I did it just to be on the safe side.

    Hi pittroj,

The problem may be the horn switch contact, corrosion where the wire secures to the horn switch or horn switch plate, harness connection to either side two the steering column slip ring (some call a clock spring), or the worst of it, a failing slip ring.

You would pull the fuse or otherwise de-power the SRS air bag, wait some minutes (unsure how long for the air bag deployment system capacitor(s?) to de-energize), and then you can access the components under the steering column box to start.

Though I imagine others including Spook can better help you.
