Identifying Transmission - 1993 240 200

Sorry to double-post. Forgot my login but then remembered it. Not sure how to delete the first post.

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what transmission is on my 93 240 wagon.

The tag on the transmission says Model No 03-70. Is that an AW70? It's original to the car but I've gotten a bunch of different info decoding the VIN. First part of the VIN is YV1AW8806P. What do the '0' and '6' mean? I saw one that listed AW70/71/72 Lock-up for a '6' but my transmission tag doesn't list an 'L' at the end.

Thank you,
Susie

I have the same AW 03-70 in my 1989 turbo 740 wagon. Think it's the same as the AW 71. Only thing to look for is the same rear mount for trans. Sorry ! No AW 03-70 L Really came to the USA. If you were to find one, remember to get the torque converter with it.

I put an AW70L in one of my 1990 240. It came out of a 1994 940. The AW70L came with a lock up toque converter. (basically a 5 speed)

i honestly do not understand why this simple question requires a 4 horse opera to answer.

crazy girl

any aw70 found on volvo 240 sedan or wagon between 1989-1993 will work just fine for you.

The AW70 with lock up has a single plastic screen in the bottom of the bell housing. The same transmission without lock up has two screens in the bottom of the bell housing.

Identifying Transmission - 1993 240 200

Hello,

I have a 93 wagon with 232k on her. Last month I dropped the transmission to replace the rear main engine seal. While it was out, I removed as much of the old fluid from the torque convertor as I could and replaced the transmission filter and pan gasket. The fluid was very, VERY dirty. Since putting her back together there is a hesitation when it shifts and it didn't used to do that. I think we kicked a hornet nest.

So... now I am trying to determine what transmission I have in order to track down a potential replacement. My bellhousing has two plastic vents and the tag from the transmission reads:

Aisin AW Co Ltd
Model 03-70

To the right of the model #:
1208
602

Serial
92HC 87545

Thank you,
Susie

Did you check to make sure its not a problem with the kick down cable?

I did disconnect it up in the engine and tried to see if it travelled smoothly. What should I be looking for?

Thank you,
Susie

Make sure the cable retracts smoothly to the transmission and isn't binding due to frayed wires. It sounds like you did that.

Check out this story about a rear main seal replacement which grew into a kickdown cable story. Joe HC, a long-time Brickboarder, is also an accomplished author, so reading this account won't bore you to tears. Click the thumbnails for detailed photography.

The 0 mean it is a basic version (no egr) and the P means it's a 1993.

VIN 200

... and the 6 in "8806" is a check digit used to validate the VIN. It has no configuration information.

Hi Ted,
You lost me in all those zerO"s.
What did they represent while giving a reply?

I have to say a picture of the transmission or tags from her might work better for all.

Phil

The way I understand it, Phil, is all automatic 240s got an AW-70 since 1982, or an AW-71 if turbocharged.

Ted is saying the AW-70 is as common as leaky refrigeration plants. Hundreds of thousands.

Problem is, the model designation (03-70 on the plate) is not enough to ID the tranny for replacement. There are still options to consider, by year of application, e.g. take-off for speedometer cable (82-85) or ball bearing tailshaft (93).

Without knowing why the OP wants this identified, none of us can answer the question satisfactorily, picture of plate notwithstanding.

Art,

Good information on the 1993 having a ball bearing tailshaft. Didn't realize this.
