After running for a while on highway, doesn't start right away 200 1989

Hello fellow brickers!

I've just recently been having a problem with my volvo while on hours long drives. After I stop for gas or a bite to eat while driving for more than an hour or so, it won't start right away. It sounds like it just won't ignite or get spark.

This problem has occurred over the years. Usually after 5 more minutes of letting it sit after first trying to start it, it'll start up fine. I am wondering if this is just a hot engine thing or possibly my main ignition wire from the coil to the distributor. That's what a friend of mine was postulating.

Thanks for any advice and knowledge!

My ignition amplifier would get hot in 92+ heat here in New Mexico, and my 240 would stall while I was driving. After a short cooling off she would start right up. Removed the amplifier and applied heat sink behind it to absorb and displace the heat.

Good luck and please post your solution.

as the other posters have offered

    crank sensor
    ignition control module
i would also add ignition coil

1 or more is likely where your troubles lie

    Marc,

Have you checked the Crank Position Sensor (CPS) or replaced it any time since you've owned the car?

    Thanks,

    Matt

First thing comes to mind is the ignition amplifier. If you have never removed it, take it off and reinstall using some heat sink paste. Overheating of this has been known to cause your symptoms. Also, inspect and clean the 25 amp fuse and surrounding wires. Plenty of info on all this in the FAQ
