Access to d-type odrive restrictor jet? 120-130

Is it possible to clean to remove and clean a d-type overdrive restrictor jet without dropping the transmission? Apparently the cover nut in on the top of the transmission.

If the answer is "yes", please share your technique.

I'm thinking of cutting an access hole in the top of the tunnel.

AND, I have a very weak reverse gear. It is not an electrical problem. The solenoid is adjusted correctly.

Well, whaddya know? There's a factory access hole and plug. 120-130

Well, whaddya know? There's a factory access hole and plug.

Cleaning out the jet also makes no difference in the weak/whining reverse.

So I guess I will try misaligning the solenoid to see if I can make it behave.
    Right now it's perfectly aligned.

The overdrive shifts perfectly as it is, so I guess I will avoid parking nose down.

There is no connection between the overdrive and reverse. However it is well known that if the selector plunger, the one you say was sticking, and hasn't bled off the pressure holding the OD in, damage to the reverse gear and its selector can occur. This is why you have the cut out switch on the box so that the OD can't be selected in other gear but top. Those that choose to by-pass this or can't be bothered to fix the problem will at some point find themselves selecting reverse with the OD still engaged. Damage to the box and your wallet will occur. Sounds like this may already have happened in this case.

Thanks, it had a sticky solenoid, so the one-way clutch is prolly damaged. 120-130

Yes, it had a sticky solenoid so I bet it stayed engaged at some point. It was an old tranny and the unidirectional clutch probably had been busted for a while.

I'll check with my local guys for a replacement o-drive, but I'd like to rebuild this one also. Can't seem to find that part anywhere. https://www.spitbits.com/ seems to have the most complete o-drive parts list but they don't list that.

Many sites specifically refer to the slipping reverse as a specific symptom caused by excess residual pressure. Even so, that would wreck the one-way clutch.

        Thanks again.

I have a D-type with a weak reverse, it was like that when I bought it and 20 years later it is still the same. I believe the clutch material to be worn out, but it still works fine 100,000 miles on.... except it won't reverse up car ramps, so you just have to be carefull where you park it and be gentle letting out the clutch in reverse. For awhile it had no 4th gear switch, and combining reverse with OD gives out a terrible noise, do that too many times that will kill the one way clutch.
