Stuck water Pump 200

A little background on the problem of the 88 244 DL. Our daughter purchased the car a few years ago and alot of work was done to it. I did work as I had time and some stuff was done by an independent a shop that suppossedly knows Volvo's.We purchased the car from her. The timing belt was done about a year ago. The car is running hotter than normal. The top 1/4 of the radiator is hot and the rest is cold. I don't know the age of the radiator so I bought a Nissens. I figured it would be a good idea to replace the water pump, not leaking. All of the bolts are out and the 2 nuts and bolt/nut for heater pipe. The water pump is stuck, I mean stuck. I can't pry it and don't want to break something. What am I missing or just button up? Thanks Matt

Hi Grassman,
Something does not add up, either your car has a transplanted engine, or you did not give us the correct year. 6 bolt pump = 84 or older B21 or B23. 5 bolt pump = 85 to 93 B230. The pump you have does not fit that engine.

Look carefully there may be mores nuts or bolts to remove! How many have you removed?

There are 3 bolts and 2 nuts/studs on the front of the pump, and only one nut and bolt holding the heater pipe to the back of it.

That's what I removed. 3 bolts,2 nuts and one bolt and nut. I don't know if there was rtv used but my experience is it doesn't hold that good. Thanks for the quick reply. Matt

if you have removed all the nuts and bolts the only thing holding it on is whatever sealant/glue the previous installer used on the pump surface.

using a hammer is not going to hurt anything. just use to hammer towards the radiator so the heater core pipe off the water pumps comes straight out of its slot in the pump.

once you're sure its loose whack away.

make sure you use a sharp razor blade to get the block/pump mating surface scrupulously clean

Got it. There was another bolt,4 bolts 2 nuts and the bolt/nut for the heater pipe. The new water pump,Graf, came with 3 bolts. Got a mirror and saw the missed one. Thanks for the help but feel like a goof. Not the first time and sure it won't be the last!! matt

Hi,

Yes, I try to keep a mirror handy for two reasons. Hidden bolts and the alignment of the intermediate sprocket dot to the 3 "O" clock position to the straight line on the inside of the plastic case timing cover.
If you are checking or replacing the timing belt it is a must to stop a parallax view from throwing things off.

I have to be careful not to let myself come into view though, as I don't want to know that I look worse off than the car I'm working on, that surely needs repair work! (:-)

Phil
