distributor locations 900 1993

I was curious regarding my 93 940's non-turbo distributor locations. I have the rex regina system and the location of the distributor is attached to the back of the head. But, I also have a distributor on the forward part of the block which is not in use but looks as though it had been used at one time in the past. I do not understand why 2 distributor locations?? Is it ok to use the forward location??
My personal mechanic did not have an answer for me even though he had serviced my previously owned 240 for a number of years. Thanks for input.

i have seen just few 940's with a native block distributor like a 240. all were manufactured in canada for the american market and i was told they were 1993 left over 240 engines after 240 production stopped.

my daughter owned a 93 with that setup

    Dear Dom's940,

Hope you're well. Further to Chris Mullet's helpful post, I'd add that if the non-working block-mounted distributor is removed, the opening needs to be closed with Volvo Part #1336764 (cap plug).

While this part no longer is available from a Volvo dealer, it might be had from a salvage yard. Even if a hole has to be drilled in it, to extract it from the engine block, that removal hole can be plugged with an ordinary bolt and nut.

Alternatively, a brass plug of the right diameter, tapped into place with a block of wood (or hard plastic) will seal the opening.

Before removing the surplus distributor, clear the area around it with brake cleaner and then compressed air, to keep dust/grit from getting inside the engine.

I don't imagine any harm will result from leaving in place the non-working distributor.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Hi Spook,
I have a couple 940 NA with block mounted distributors. One with 248K miles should get a new rotor and dist. cap. Do you or anyone else know who made the dist's and what the part numbers are or the rotor and dist. cap?
I think the cam driven distributors are Bosch?
      Thanks

        Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. Yes! Yes. The block-mounted distributor is Volvo #1367468. It was made by Bosch (# 0237 523 003). The Cap is Volvo #243797. The distributor rotor is Volvo #1389425.

The distributor may still be available from a Volvo dealer. In the US, the cost will be about $600. FCP Groton has re-built units (A1-Cardone) for about $100. Volvo VADIS and the Volvo pcoket data booklet: Cars (700,850,900) 1991-95 show this distributor as being installed on 940s with Rex-Regina, in 1993. For the Cap and Rotor, see: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-distributor-240-244-245-1389425#fitment .

In short, you can get an A-1 Cardone re-built distributor, a cap and rotor from www.fcpgroton.com. For a car that has 248K miles, I'd get all three. Once these distributors go "NLA" (no longer available), a distributor failure ends your car's service life.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

Very interesting. The car was only built with one distributor, either on the back of the head (cam driven) OR on the left side of the engine (I-shaft driven). Looks like a previous owner must have either swapped a different head onto the original engine block or they replaced the engine block and retained the original head.

If it's a Rex ignition then I would "guess" it had the cam driven distributor from birth and someone installed a different engine block.

Are you compelled to switch over to the I-shaft driven distributor? If so, why?

Chris, I ran a carfax before purchase and car was always serviced by Volvo up till the 160k mark. No mention of block or head replacement. I bought at 178k. The fellow I bought it from mentioned that the Head was recently milled so there had been some sort of problem.
Reading on IPD website, regarding dist caps, that they switched over from the cam drive back to the block drive mid year of 93. Both caps used that year. I will keep the present setup, cam drive. Spook had mentioned a cover plate which is no longer avail although I found the volvo # from a European distributor for the Volvo penta engine. It does reference a plate for sealing the hole after removal of the distrbtr. For now, I will just leave things alone.

My initial interest was purely monetary, 50-60 dollars for a distributor cap!!

Thanks to Chris and Spook. Dominic
