distributor locations 900 1993

I was curious regarding my 93 940's non-turbo distributor locations. I have the rex regina system and the location of the distributor is attached to the back of the head. But, I also have a distributor on the forward part of the block which is not in use but looks as though it had been used at one time in the past. I do not understand why 2 distributor locations?? Is it ok to use the forward location??
My personal mechanic did not have an answer for me even though he had serviced my previously owned 240 for a number of years. Thanks for input.
