AW70 Automatic Transmission Overhaul? 200 1988

1988 244DL normally aspirated about 300k (odometer doesn't work), AW70 tranmsission with overdrive, neglected by prior owner, but I've done work to get it running like new (see prior posts). The transmission works fine, ie smooth shifting without slipping or revving.

In the spring, I'm going to take a transmission class. We won't rebuild transmissions, but we can change clutches on manuals and swap transmissions. I'm wondering if it would make sense for me to replace the torque converter and, since I recently had to replace all leaking fron oil seals, the rear main oil seal. Does this make sense, or would a new torque converter damage the elderly AW70?

What are good brands and sources for torque converters?

Is there anything else I could replace, such as the kick-down cable?

Thanks!

If there is play in the output shaft I would take the time to replace the output shaft bushing and seal. After 300K they are definitely due for replacement if original. No reason to pull the transmission to do this work. Check the FAQs for details.

Better is the enemy of good. I would not mess with your good working transmission.

I suggest you don't fix what isn't broken.

The automatic transmissions used on these cars rarely give problems, provided the fluid is changed every once in a while.

I'd leave it alone and find a transmission from another car to play around with.

Enjoy your class - If you like it, buy an automatic or manual transmission from the junk yard, get a book and try to rebuild it.

Just taking one apart and trying to put it back together would be educational and maybe fun.

FAQs

suggest that only clutch and brake packs commonly need replacement, ie not the bearings.

Anyone do this?

If so, where to get parts and instruction manual?

Other than changing fluid and filter, auto transmission is specialist's job. The torque converter is where the transfer of kinetic energy from engine to transmission takes place. Its something like fluid version of mechanical clutch in manual transmission. It is sealed and rarely things would go wrong inside torque converter. Don't see the need to replace it.

Just enjoy the car and change the fluid when the time comes as mentioned in FAQ.

Amarin.
