Why is there not an 800 selection on Volvo on the headline of this site?
. Do the 700 or 900 model compare to the 850?

850 Brain Fart 900

Too many rear wheel drive Volvo's that I've owned I just never go to the AWD forum. Duh ! Must be a sign I need to get my wife's 850t head gasket fixed. Thanks for pressing the mind button to "ON'

We (my wife, 2 daughters, and me) had 5 740s (3 wagons, 2 sedan) and 3 850s (2 wagons, 1 sedan) and put about 200K on each fleet.

Sharon was hit by a drunk driver and her 744 sedan performed well - she and her 3 friends were un injured. The trauma center could not believe that she was unhurt when the EMTs told them how serious the impact was right on the drivers door. They x-rayed her legs and hips because they thought she may have been so hurt that she might be paralyzed.

We loved all these Volvos.

It was apparent that the 850s were a much more modern generation - smoother, faster, better handling, more comfortable. We had 4 snow tires on all our cars and all did well in snow.

850s are harder to repair yourself - we used a dealer - parts and labor was more, but of course the 850s were owned later.

If I had a time machine, I would be happy to drive either.

We (my wife and me) now have two XC70s and they are great.

Dear Nahtanha,

Hope you're well. Engines used in the 900 and 700 series cars have numbers of cylinders (four or six) that can be divided by two or three, and still produce an even number. That's not so for the engines used in 800 series cars.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Hi Spook and Nahtanha,

The B234 with that PRV quattrovalve (VW speak) in some mid production run 700s and maybe early 900s without Turbo is the closest thing to an 850 B52xx engine. So far as I know, all of these engines in FWD / AWD are two cam engines and are interference engines.

Hard to get my fat hands into the FWD engine bay. Engine bay gets really crowded by the XC70+ years.

More about torque than HP in 850/S70 non-turbo. From 1993 onward features were added two the five cylinder engines with variable valve timing at one or both cams. Yet OBD II provides more comprehensive reporting and is less tolerant of faulty running conditions.

I have nearly zero time with FWD / AWD driving it or getting into the engine bay. Like the 850 with manual gearbox.

May be best to ask at the FWD forum so Klaus and folks clue us all in.

Yet for non-turbo torque, rather the (1972) 164 with B30 and M410 manual gear box. Plenty of engine bay space in there! Plenty of torque!

Sort of want one myself. No Turbo. Manual transmission FWD (front wheel drive) late 850.

Questions?

Hope that halps you!

850 - Ooops ... Incorrect Linked Thing to AWD 900

Ooop! Incorrect link in that prior post o' mine.

I'd get in 'F' in technically writin' class when editing links as part of a web article.

Correctly, to the AWD / FWD forum:

AWD

... and also at the top of these brickboard pages for the AWD / FWD Volvo models that includes 850, so click the AWD

Sorry about that Nahtanha and folks.

Please call me Mr. Wrong.

As Uncle Old Duke advocated Purolator several times in as many years, and Michael Yount mentions Mann / Hummel owns Purolator I'll use Purolator next. Easier to get at a store, maybe.

Something quality for extended service using synthetic Mobile 1.

Yet need to replace two cylinder head gaskets. Two 240, the li'l red 1990 wagon and the verdigris 1992 240 GL both now drink coolant slowly. Gt to replace them exhaust manifold gasket finally. Spare a garage? Don't like doing such work under skies and leaves and rain or hhhwhut have you again at all.

Sad Li'l Red Wagon
