Plastic pad re-installation between rear wheel and bumper 200

On my 240 1982, about 15 years ago I covered corrosion between rear wheel and bumper using the plastic pads that are on 1986-1993. I used only the side pieces, not under the bumper rear contour.

At that time I used double sided glued white foam tape found at Walmart I think.

Since a couple years the tape started to give up and showed space between fender and plastic pad. I have removed the pad and is clean now.

Question: what is the best trim tape for this application ?

I saw some 3M red trim tape on the shelf but don't know how well it will adhere to this type of plastic which I suspect could be polypropylene.

Have a good day and thanks.

Plastic pad re-installation between rear wheel and bumper 200

Hi there, thanks for the new topic.

I have removed the original trim pieces, from the doors and put them back on using the Very High Bond 3M (VHB).
3M makes or packages different grades or level of holding power, noted on the packaging only, in our hardware stores.
This is marketing again and the required holding power can vary around most home uses.
The stuff they sell in auto parts stores is for trim purposes, but is not labeled LIKE any others.
So, you don’t know what you are getting in holding power.
They don’t want you to do any thinking about that! It just priced, “ for whatever they think they can get.”
Manufacturers and the Automotive stores can buy enough to get their own branding or repackaging.
Of course, these vary in PRICE slightly across the offered across the total consumer spectrum.
When in reality, there is very little cost difference to produce any of these products.

The parts store stuff is cut narrow as trim IS on most cars Is!
Couple this with a prescribed length, for like only one side of the car, you end up needing two of their rolls to do wider trimmings. In the early nineties GM made whole sides of their cars out of plastic trim and saw some loose ones right on the new car lot!
IMO, If one side is failing so will the other side.
Since this product goes under things, like our plastic trim, they are not exposed to that much weather and any direct UV rays.
It will be just like behind a picture hung in a sun room! Duh?

I didn’t have access to a Walmart, nor did I know they carried it, so I purchased the lower pounds of holding weight “Offered” from local hardware stores.
I like “middle of the road choices” on most everything I buy!
Walmart is very limiting on choices when doing some projects, better, but they do a good job of showing an optional pricing structure!
I don’t like fueling the fire of any money grubbing marketing schemes with Gillette at the top of my hit list, long ago!

I bought a wider strip that I cut down the middle, to in effect, double the overall length you get per roll. That‘s where the savings really kicked in.
I used one strip top and bottom or if you need more thickness to get some area of a possible “deeper void” you can double it down there.
As I remember, there were flattened areas molded into the plastic door trim strips for placing the original tape used by Volvo.
I have not messed with the rear sections, so I cannot help you there.

When using this stuff, press very lightly to touch down the trim as It sticks very easily!
I use denatured alcohol or “wood” alcohol as a mild solvent on the finish and plastic to remove remnants of road grime.
Toluene and Xylene have become banned in California. Even paint thinner now has a “green” alternative that actually doesn’t smell bad and get this, was less expensive!

My bottom door trims had to be straight from one end to the other and match those end pieces you are working on.
I’ll suggest you to practice with the trim “bare of peeled tape” to locate important alignment points or some masking tape marks “Beforehand.”
This way it will keep “Your hands” from getting the chance to do “fidgeting” thing! (*:-)

Good luck!
Phil

Found old posts and I am going ahead with the red 3M 1/2 inch trim tape.
