I have seen premature deterioration of brake wheel cylinder seals that I attribute to the use of DOT 3 in Volvos that we have serviced over the near 40 years of working on old Volvos.

I have read posts at some British car sites that refer to the same issue.

Volvo recommends DOT 4 and that is all I use in all my customers cars with non silicone based brake fluids.
