Just to wrap up: things went smoothly and after install, exhaust gas in the coolant no longer a problem. Head was boiled and milled. Along with removal and coils for two broken studs, $155. Put in new exhaust manifold studs; still looking for new nuts. Put in new valve hushers; no apparent difference. Did all three seals and w-pump washer on top. Pulse air manifold had aging washers at the manifold so I put in new copper washers. Flushed out cooling system with the garden hose. Cleaned alot of things as they became accessible.
Didn't do anything with heater hoses or valve as they all looked pretty good at 7 years. No new radiator hoses or thermostat.
A big revelation was a split breather box had been spewing for some time. I had put in a Skandix brand unit 4 years ago and it opened up at the top seam of the forward-most chamber. What a mess. I had the original breather on hand
I suspect there had been excess crankcase pressure for a few years, causing oil leaks all over ( oh no, the rear main?!) I'm keeping fingers crossed as I start putting miles on.
About $250 to keep the 25 year old car on the road.
