How does one remove the gear shift knob on an 1800's manual transmission? I have tried unscrewing it but the shaft that it attaches to just spins! Do I put a clamp on the chrome shaft and reattempt to unscrew it or is it just a pull up friction attachment?

    The knob unscrews. You just have to hold the chrome shaft with something that doesn’t scratch it.

      Mullet, Thanks. Why is the shifter shaft a two piece assembly? The chrome extension just spins when you turn the shift knob!

        There is rubber isolation that separates the lower/inner shaft from the chrome outer shaft that is supposed to limit the vibration being transferred from the transmission to the knob. You can tighten the knob down firmly and then rotate the whole chrome section to where the imprinted shift pattern reads with the numbers right side up.
