Gear shift knob removal 1800 1970

How does one remove the gear shift knob on an 1800's manual transmission? I have tried unscrewing it but the shaft that it attaches to just spins! Do I put a clamp on the chrome shaft and reattempt to unscrew it or is it just a pull up friction attachment?
