Can't remove PV544 rear brake drum 444-544 1962

Hi guys:
I am totally unable to remove the left rear brake drum on my '62 PV544. I use a 5 hole puller and the castle nut put back on for shaft end protection, all brakes released, and I whack the you-know-what out of the puller. No dice! And I've resorted to heating the hub with my propane torch, and applying PB Blaster solvent. No cigar! It's totally frozen onto the axle half shaft. I don't know what to do next.

I have no idea why, when I respond to one of your excellent posts via my email program (Thunderbird), the date shows "1969"!! My PC is set correctly. Anybody run into this?

Thanks guys for the ideas! I've done what some of you suggested - load up the puller and walk away from it for awhile to see what happens. I left and traveled 225 miles to the West coast for Turkey day stuff. When I come back I hope it's off, but not blasted thru a hole in the side of my barn where I keep the car.

If it's not off, and the puller has a cross bar for hammering on, give it a clout every few hours or when you pass by. Good luck.

Ron;

Maybe, if you've been good and Odin smiles down upon you, you will really have something to be thankful for when you get back from the holiday...!

Cheers

Can't remove PV544 rear brake drum 444-544 1962

A few years ago I had a 544 with a stuck rear drum. After several weeks of using the "Volvo style" puller, heat, bigger & bigger hammers, different brands of penetrant, and a whole new inventory of cuss words etc. with no success, I finally had to cut it off. Then discovered that someone had installed the drum without the square key, so the axle had spun inside the drum, which practically welded them together.

Friction Welding!...but that's sure not what Volvo had in mind for uniting the Hub to the Halfshaft! ...poor Ron...he's having a hellova time removing his Drums...as a LAST RESORT, he might have to cut them off like you did! He's not quite there yet though... Cheers

Have you left the puller on overnight exerting pressure? It may be a long shot given what you've already tried but I've had drums launch themselves off overnight. Have something blocking the drum from crashing through a wall -- or worse, damaging an adjacent car. - Dave

Copy of private message sent to Ron for those who ever encounter a totally miserable Drum removal, or are just interested:

Ron;

I presume you've seen my notes on the subject on the SW-EM page...the next thing I can recommend beyond what you've said you've already done is leaving it under HIGH preload until thermal variations which occur over time pop it off...winter cold or even cooling with liquid nitrogen plus torch heat would give the highest temp delta...the next option is to procure and apply the MASSIVE AND IRRESISTIBLE POWER of a hydraulic Puller shown on the Notes page, which may damage something, but "SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE" and FINALLY, and as a LAST RESORT, if ALL previous attempts fail, cutting it off with a grinder.

Please record you Drum removal actions...they are among the most desperate I've heard of, and your experience and results will surely be added to the Notes article...

I'm sorry for your pain and suffering in this...I feel for you!

Good Luck
