SU Carburators

Question for SU experts. My early 1963 P1800 has dual HS6 4 bolt carburetors, the triangle aluminum tag number is AUD966F and R. I have purchased a SU HS6 rebuilt kit from VP, looking closely at the needle value and seat in the kit is different than mine in appearances not sure if I should be using them or not. I researched a lot on the internet for specs for these carbs but can not find anything for my tag number, I find a ton for MG's but all the SU reference books I have found do not list Volvo's for some reason nor the AUD966 model to get correct information. Any recommendation/info would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Peter

Peter, the link above takes you to the Volvo P1800 SU page from Burlen. They list the early SU as AUD 966!

Yes, thank you Ian, I visited the Burlen site yesterday. Awesome information and the best I've seen to date. I did see my carbs ID listed for 1961-1962 as you stated, since mine was the 23 car built in 1963 they used the same carburetors until some point to switch over to a newer version. Plus Burlen explained the advantages of using the newer viton tip needle, I am very confident to move forward with the rebuild process now.

      Thank you again,
      Peter

Peter, great that you got the information you needed. For setting up twin SUs I recommend getting one of the guides available. The Haynes one is OK. They do need to be balanced so they operate as one. Once set up they should remain like that indefinitely.

Yes I look forward to learning and trying to tune them up. I sent an email to Burlen to find out which air flow meter they would recommend either the SK or BK type. I'll try to pick up a copy of the Haynes manual used if available.

          Thanks,
          Peter

Is this the Haynes manual you would recommend Ian "Volvo 120 & 130 Series (and P1800) (61 - 73) Haynes Repair Manual", I see it used on Amazon for ~$8.00 :)

Peter, the Haynes manual I was referring to is the one specifically for SU carbs. The link above may work for Amazon. There is also the "official" one available from Burlen of course. These should be the best guides.
I would think the Haynes manual to the P1800 would be valuable to you as well, but I haven't looked at it - I only have a 945 Volvo!!
My SU experience is with MGs and Triumph TRs

Oh excellent, thank you for clearing that up for me with the correct manual to try to obtain. Yes I was thinking of buying one from Burlen too. I'm still several months away before my car is ready to start up so have some time.
Thanks again Ian for all your help,
                Peter

My Haynes SU manual suggests AUD94F and AUD94R for the 1963 P1800. This may be for British/European spec cars though.
The needles for the float chambers are now available with a viton tip, so this is what you may have.
I would recommend getting in touch with Burlen Fuel Services here in the UK. They are the manufacturers of all the SU components.

Thank you, indeed the new needle valve does have a viton tip which I found people say is better than the ball bearing type for sealing which is what I have. And yes I've see information on the AUD94 but nothing on mine which is a early US model serial 6023.

I have been trying to upload a photo to attach to this message but can't seem to figure that out yet :) I think it is in the Image Library but no clue how its linked or not to this post

      Thank you again,

Peter, no images visible, but perhaps not needed?
When ordering parts for my SU carbs I don't normally quote the AUD code, just the carb size and whatever metering needles I want. If you are just rebuilding existing carbs that should be all you need.
I would email Burlen with any questions, they also have an excellent informative website.

Thanks Ian, I will check out their website for sure. I've been watching on youtube a very smart gentleman's channel called D3Sshooter, he has several excellent videos on SU and many other vintage restoration projects he undertakes that are quit excellent if you or anyone on this site has not seen before might be worth looking into. He stresses the importance to identify your carbs correctly and verify correct parts are within the carburetor before rebuilding.

          All the best,
          Peter

If you remove a metering needle you should see a code stamped into the stem. On 122S models of that vintage I've always found ZH needles - rather lean, especially when compared to the later '67 & '68 B18 with a higher compression ratio and split exhaust manifold. Years ago I came across a soft cover reference booklet with all the SU needles listed, measured every 1/8 inch - about a zillion needles (maybe a little bit of exaggeration). -- Dave

I think you are correct with the "zillion" Dave, pretty amazing company SU is, they do an incredible job of documenting everything they have built over the many years and making the data available to all.
