Thank you for acknowledging this. However, I have to disagree that this is a thankless job.
You'd be surprised how much this site has had to do with my career. No matter how high perched the tech person, they find my tales about building this and fighting to keep it going fascinating. (I'll resist sounding boastful, but I've been to at least the last basecamp before the summit of tech leadership.)
As we see the social media giants implode, I think we all have an example of what can be done with technology that is truly about building and maintaining. We kept a strong community here. I can't take credit for more than putting up some guardrails here and there on top of keeping the lights on.
We self-governed. We have shown that a good community can be built virtually despite all of the challenges that are so incredibly obvious everywhere else.
I see technology becoming a dangerous, evil threat to mankind but I'm not afraid because I know that it can be used to truly serve each of us and our families as we've proven here.
I'm grateful for this site and all of you who have made it what it is.
