PV front turn signal lights chrome trim 444-544 1962

Anybody know how to fit the circular chrome trim piece onto the rubber assembly for the front turn lights on the 1962 PV544? I've tried everything but can't get the entire trim piece to slip into the slot. Tried used soap solution to lubricate things, even oil, but when I get about a third of it pressed into place, the other side pops out. Help!

    Are you sure that both the ring and the rubber housing are both Volvo? Is the lens Volvo? There are very similar Lucas items and they don't mix and match very well.

      If the rubber is hard, it won't be easy to get the trim/retaining ring installed.

      Is there any chance you are not installing it in the correct groove?

      There is a separate groove for the ring and it doesn't go in the same area as the lens, but in the groove just outside of the pocket for the lens.
