940 horn physical mounting 900

Well, gee whiz. I went out to start repairing the horns on this 1995 Volvo 940 and, guess what, they were not there! The yellow and blue/black wires were there, snipped off. But no horns. I suspect they were stolen.

I have taken a look around and have seen a short mounting bracket that comes with a new horn and I can see where it connects to the horn itself.

But I am wondering about the other end of the bracket. I am guessing I will need some kind of bolt to connect the bracket to the frame of the car. But what size bolt?

I will try to get a used pair from my favourite wrecking yard and perhaps he will supply me with whatever information I need about the attaching bolt. But in the interim I thought I might pose the question.

I hope this is not another month long repair facing me!

Dear muskox37,

Hope you're well. The horn mounting bracket is #1325029. Unfortunately, it is no longer available from Volvo.

A salvage yard, especially one the U.S. southwest, should have such a bracket, in good shape.

This bracket was used until Volvo stopped making rear-wheel drive cars (1998), so there's a wide range of donor cars.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Good morning Spook,

I have a pretty good local wrecking yard and he is going to sell me the horns and bracket at thirty dollars a pop. A little pricey but I can just drive down and get them. I will keep your suggestion in mind if he cannot supply them when all is said and done.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Although I did own a '92 940T I do not recall exactly how the horn(s) is mounted I would assume it is something like the way they're mounted on a 240. The earlier 240's have twin horns, my '93 245 has only one but mounted the same way. The bracket attached to the horn bolts to a fixed nut built into the center upright in front of the radiator. That bracket uses an 8mm bolt (either 12 or 13mm bolt head) and you can find those easily at any Loews or Home Depot -- or better yet, your local privately owned hardware store. - Dave
