1993 940 Turbo no start. 900 1993

A friend of mine has a 1993 940 Turbo. He said he was driving it the other day and it just died and would not restart. He said it does have spark and fuel. He also mentioned that he replaced the crank position sensor, verified the stage unit was good. New plugs cap and wires. He mentioned the computer below the instrument panel. This was a new one to me. I’m aware of the one in the right kick panel. The car does have EGR

Any idea as to what to check next. He said he checked the compression and it was good. So that means the timing belt did not break. Thanks for any advice.

Dear Blindboy,

Hope you're well. I presume you meant "PB Blaster". If a little lubrication caused the idle air control valve (IACV) to work, when it had not worked, the valve is likely very dirty. The lubrication eases things. But that isn't likely to last.

Pull the IACV and clean it, using cotton-tipped swabs moistened with acetone (or methyl ethyl ketone, if you can find it). The goal is to remove all carbon from the valve's intake port and the valve opening. When the swabs are clean, so is the valve.

Do not immerse the IACV in solvent: only use cotton-tipped swabs.

Keep the hose connection end pointed downwards, to make sure solvent does not enter the motor compartment (the end with the electrical connector).

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Dear Mr brick driver,

Hope you're well. Underneath the instrument cluster, is the ignition control module. These seem to be as hardy as are the engine control modules (mounted behind the panel, on the door-side of the passenger's foot-well).

If the radio interference suppression relay (aka fuel injection relay) is the factory-original unit, it is suspect. After 28 years of service, it doesn't owe anyone even a penny. On turbo-equipped models, this relay is mounted on the inner fender wall, on the driver's side, just behind the headlamp. The relay may be behind a wiring harness. It is very dark brown (almost black), so hard to see.

It is possible the coil has failed. Bosch coils seem quite durable, so I'd start with checking the coil's contacts for corrosion. Sometimes an invisibly-thin layer of corrosion can disrupt the flow of power. An spray of aerosol corrosion-remover (e.g., Deoxit) will promote a good connection.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

He did spray either into it and it did not run either. Makes you wonder if it’s weak spark.
