Key on distributor rotor?

There is a noticeable slot in the distributor rotor shaft and a flat spot on the rotor. Is there supposed to be a key that locks them together?

I don't remember from the last time I changed the cap and rotor.

Unless you have something weird, its plug and play. You take the new rotor out of the box, and place it on the distributor. There are no keys or other removable parts. If it doesn't fit, you have the wrong part.

There should be a little square-ish key inside the rotor that is the same width as the slot in the shaft. Sometimes it’s sort of sloped. Are you using a Bosch rotor or another brand?

Its another brand. Maybe I can find the key in the box or from the old one which was a Bosch.

The “key” is not a separate piece. It’s molded in as part of the rotor. When you look at the old Bosch one you’ll see what I mean.

All rotors made to OEM specifications should come internally keyed to the half notch on the end of the distributor shaft. The rotor may or may not be designed with a metal tension tab deep inside that aligns to the notch. Most have a slight taper and when fully seated in the proper orientation they should be on good and snug and won’t need a tension tab. Once properly seated, the ones like most of the Bosch with the tapered shafts can be quite difficult to get off again.
