Vintage Volvo USA history ??? 120-130

When was Volvo Distributing, Inc.; Rockleigh, N.J. established ?
Or, who imported Volvo Cars (PV444/544 & Amazon's 122) into the US in the 1950's and early 1960's ?
Did Volvo actually import the cars themselves, or was there a 3rd party like Max Hoffman involved ?
Since Max Hoffman was the early importer/distributor for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Porsche, Jaguar and probably a few other makes.

Vintage Volvo Canada history 120-130

To add to that great article on Volvo USA history, this was followed three years later in 1958 with direct imports from Sweden into the neighbouring Canadian market. Having a similar geographic and cultural climate to Sweden, it didn't take much to have success in the Canadian market. In 1963, Volvo established its first foreign assembly plant outside of Sweden in Nova Scotia producing the PV 544 for the entire North American market. This plant continued producing and assembling various Volvo models for North America right through to 1998. Many of our old bricks still bear the Made in Halifax sticker on the cross bar in front of the rad or a Made in Halifax decal on the rear window. Here's the matching press release to what Will posted from the Volvo Cars of North America website:

And here's a good Wikipedia article on the Halifax plant itself, including mention of Volvo's famed production team model of assembly and an early use of robotics to achieve levels of production quality and worker satisfaction that the long Detroit assembly lines could only dream of at the time
