To add to that great article on Volvo USA history, this was followed three years later in 1958 with direct imports from Sweden into the neighbouring Canadian market. Having a similar geographic and cultural climate to Sweden, it didn't take much to have success in the Canadian market. In 1963, Volvo established its first foreign assembly plant outside of Sweden in Nova Scotia producing the PV 544 for the entire North American market. This plant continued producing and assembling various Volvo models for North America right through to 1998. Many of our old bricks still bear the Made in Halifax sticker on the cross bar in front of the rad or a Made in Halifax decal on the rear window.
