electric cooling fan seized 900

Just for the record:

Started hearing some weird noises while standing at a light, like a squeaky fan pully or something. I thought it was another car's AC compressor. The next day, I smelled electric overheating or melted plastic. Luckily I was almost home. Under the hood I noticed smoke from around the radiator. I remembered the noise and realized the fan motor had seized and when asked to run, it smoked instead.

Had a replacement in the parts department. Easy in and out

In one of our 740 that I was planning on replacing, i found a generic fan at an auto store that was a great fit.

I did not want to install it with the nylon fittings included in the kit, I actually fastened the new fan in the old shroud by tying it in the shroud with about a dozen pieces of steel wire twisted to tighten it.

Just for the record too, the radiator cooling fan is the most reliable part in the 940 universe. I used mine for 24 years, it never complained or making any unusual sound in a car with almost 900k km mileage. About several years back, I took it out just for fun to do general checking, hoping to blow out some accumulated dust with pressurized can and doing some lubrication. This when i noticed the front end bearing (roller bearing type, not bronze sleeved bearing like blower motor) was worn, the spindle was a little bit wobbly but still no noise there. Also dismantled the back plate to look at the brushes and commutator. Brushes were just about halfway worn but still good, spring still strong. Anyway I ordered a new part (whole fan-motor assembly) from brick and mortar Volvo parts shop in my town. And all goes well then.

Amarin.
