weird screwup w radiator,,

My 93-940 wagon,,I screwed up installing the rubber o ring /seal in the port for the fan sensor.I didnt take a minute to see how it was installed.I took it for a ride & coolant leaked out & caused it to spill n manifold. I tried to install it when the coolant was hot & it slipped into the radiator tank!!!
Now I have to figure out how to fish it out??
Anyone ever make that mistake??

I can't say I've ever done that but for sure you'll have to start with removing the lower hose and looking with a lamp and mirror. If your radiator has a built in transmission oil cooler (whether stick shift or automatic) the cooler tube may keep the seal from dropping to the bottom - or the seal could be stuck at the cooler tube altogether. If the seal isn't at the bottom you'll need to remove the radiator and shake it around to get the seal near an opening (top or bottom) and use a pair of needle nose pliers to fish it out. Have another new one on hand. -- Dave

I just used a hooked coat hanger .It was floating right by the opening.

Lucky you for being able to fish it out. I figured the odds were you'd have to pull the rad and shake it upside down just to see it. In that case I would have suggested just leaving it and getting a new grommet.

For proper installation, mount the thermostat in the grommet then push that into the opening. It's supposed to be a dry fit, but using water as a lubricant makes life easier, just don't use anything petroleum based. What with plastic side tanks, do not be tempted to hammer it in, rather press it in. I now use a carpenter's F-clamp with a block of wood behind the rad to prevent damage and a scrap of wood or metal bar between the thermostat terminals to prevent damage there. When you're done, run one or two zip ties through the core and around the tank to secure it from ever blowing out -happened to me once. Use black UV-resistant zip ties and the fattest ones that will go through the core to maximize longevity.

Why didnt Volvo just put a female hose fitting around the sensor & a male fitting on the radiator!!???
          Would ve been easier!!
          I have it jury rigged w nylon twine,,& a regular o ring,,,waiting for a new volvo seal from amazaon././

1 side has a little bit bigger rim than the other side,,Im wondering which side is pressed in??
The other thing I thought of was to [old seal]put it in the freezer & &then run &try to get it in place??

The narrow part goes in first then you press it in until the shoulder is more or less level. I’ve not tried freezing, nor do I recall seeing that idea before. I don’t think it would help, if anything I suspect it might make it more difficult if it’s frozen rock solid. I doubt it makes it appreciably thinner and you do want some flexibility so it will compress slightly going through the neck. I’m not sure if warming to soften it would make much difference either. The clamp method always works well for me with a small block of wood nested semi-level on the other side. If you’re trying to avoid partially pulling the rad to get at the back side then maybe try fashioning a stick as a wood handle with the end sculpted to fit over the terminals. Wedging your body against the front of the car try pulling it toward you or maybe try using something like a length of 2x4 against the engine as a lever against the other end of the handle. I normally just do it dry unless I’m having a problem. If you’re half careful and the side tank should ever crack doing this I would expect that rad was due to soon fail anyway.
