Hand Brake Cable 140-160 1972

I'm looking to replace my handbrake cable on my 1972 142. It just broke and living in a hilly area I really need it for parking. I'm located in the U.S. and can't seem to find a replacement. Everything I find is for '71 and sooner or '73 and later, none listed for a '72. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    The up to 1972 and earlier 140 Volvo parts manual lists three different parking brake cables. The parts number and the chassis number range for the 142 which each cable applies to are as follows

    Part #
    679472 Up to chassis 112399
    683348 112400 - 178959
    684586 178960 -

    All three cables are available. Just enter Volvo xxxxxx (part number) in the Google search bar and you will find a bunch of vendors. Some of othe cables still appear to be listed by Volvo as OEM parts.

    If you are going to own a vintage Volvo, get a copy of the parts manual. With Google and the correct part number it is the fastest way to find parts.

      Sorry for my ignorance, but i've tried to find the chassis number and am not sure I have it right. There is a plate on the drivers side at the back of the opening that say "this vehicle", and has a number (1426364-274770). Does that contain the chassis number? If not where actually do I find it? Thanks.

        The 2nd set of numbers indicates you have a 1972 142.

      Thanks so much. The parts manual is definitely a great idea.

        CB;

        I recommend prelubing replacement e-brake cables with a thinned out graphite grease/Anti-Seize (when the thining agent [I like tri-Flow for this] evaporates away it leaves the graphite right where it needs to be!).

        I also recommend freeing and lubing with AS, the (what I will call pivot linkage) in the Disc, as you will be in there anyway to install the rep cable. These linkages spend most of their life trying to rust themselves into a "monolithic structure", so the AS will prevent this...

        Cheers

          Volvo From Heck answering on a borrow3ed laptop. I'd just like to point out that the post by Ron shows the cable setup used on the early 140's with the pull linkage at the top of the dust shield, while the later cars had the link at the bottom - hence the difference in cable length. I've only seen the upper pull on '67-'70 140 models. - Dave
