Roof rack grommets 200

My car had a factory/dealer installed roof rack and when I bought it and started restoring it the rack was off the car with duct tape over the holes. I am trying to put it back on and the old grommets, with the nuts inserted, are useless, the lower rubber is more than half gone on most of them.

What are these things called--grommet with a nut in it--and is there a reasonable substitute out there? I haven't checked but I'm pretty certain they are NLA from Volvo.

BTW, I'm not looking for the roof hole plugs but the fasteners to reinstall the rack.

I thought of using nutsert rivets and sealing it with a butt load of caulk, I suppose that would be the last resort.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I searched the archive and must have just missed the thread that was posted.

I have a fastener warehouse locally here and I think the well nuts--now I know what they are called--are the solution. I had thought about jack nuts and nutsert rivets but those wouldn't give the seal to keep moisture out. Regardless I'll be caulking all the rubber seats to make sure.

When I saw what originally went in I was a little surprised because Volvo over-engineered just about everything on these cars and those grommets that came off are clearly not meant to last the lifetime of a car as durable as a 240.

When caulking use butyl rubber sealant. Silicon will corrode any galvanizing on the body. ......The holes on the roof.....

I used a threaded rubber nut to reinstall my roof rack. I'm not sure if that's exactly what they're called tho. Is there a way to upload an image?
The rack holds three surfboards at 75 mph.

For additional info on the roof rack well nuts (SAE 1/4-20, 1/2" dia, aka. expansion grommets or expansion nuts) used with 245 roof racks in the North American market you may wish to refer to this old thread here
    https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1091338
Although well nuts are readily available at places like Lowes, as noted in that old thread make sure the outside diameter is correct AND that the length (grip range) is relatively short in order to expand close to the shoulder and provide a more positive seal and grip.

Good quality. This is the proper replacement for the roof rack well nuts on my 1990 Volvo 240 Wagon.

    Hi,

I believe I have heard of them being referred to as “well nuts.”
It might be an industrial name or a body shop term used among those tradesmen.

Sorry I cannot help more but I have never owned a roof rack.
Never needed to study how their systems work either.
You may have to research into that name and use “rubber” or “neoprene” to see what pops.

    Phil
