LOUD SCREECHING FROM HEAD AREA, ROCKS BADLY 700 1987

1991 red-block B230F swapped into 1987 745 some years ago now failed smog only for Balancer pully rubber broke loose so timing cannot be checked. Had it replaced by employees, however they crushed crankshaft timing sprocket drive tang. I replaced both and tensioner, belt, etc. kit, even new belt guides as one was bent. Also checked distributor and coil. Would not start, sent to local independent who found air mass meter fail so now starts but rocks violently and has a screech-screech from head area. We towed it back to my shop. Disconnected all accessory belts and left covers off. Could not determine source of screech-screech with stethoscope with cam cover off. After running through things in FAQs, any ideas before I do an engine swap?

lay odds the cam is seizing to the caps due to no oil next to the head bolt between 1 and 2-too much sludge or no oil pressure.

The water pump can be ruled out as all accessory belts were removed for short test runs. A new AMM is on order to eliminate the possible MAF Cleaner possible damage now or in the past. Double check on timing says all is correct. The idea of a bad cam bearing is quite possible as the inside of the valve/cam cover has some varnish, so will tear into cam as soon as rain stops (Car is outside in central CA). Appreciate the help, and apologize for caps lock on.

My guess would be screeching from a worn water pump, sometimes difficult to isolate with a stethoscope around moving parts and belts. I'd throw in some water pump lubricant additive to see if it goes away -it's not expensive and wouldn't hurt, just makes the coolant a little milky. I've continued to drive with lubricant for some time as long as it doesn't start leaking.

For rough running, based on recent work, I'd say incorrect timing belt installation is a distinct possibility. I'd re-check timing belt installation and also check the TDC mark and notch in the built guide for the crankshaft balancer using a probe in the #1 spark plug hole, carefully splitting the difference on either side of reaching the high point from opposite directions. You can temporarity re-install the timing cover to use the timing marks on it for accuracy, then check the belt timing mark on the crankshaft belt guide to see if it's correctly aligned.

As an AMM was just installed, I'd want to put it on the potential suspect list. If it was used then it definitely goes on the suspect list. Also if someone ever tried using spray AMM cleaner on it, not good for hot wire AMMs, then that makes it a higher suspect, trust me on the that one, learned the hard way. If you could try it another engine you'd soon know. Any LH2.4 engine would do, 1989-on 240/700/900.

Dave -still with 940's, prev 740/240/140/120 You'd think I'd have learned by now

Could it be a cam bearing freezing up? The B21’s were known to do that if the oil was allowed to get sludgy , clogging the oil passage to the top end. When the bearing(s) got too dry and froze up it would strip the teeth off of the timing belt. However I don’t know if it’s much of an issue on the B230’s. Other than the expected valve spring resistance, is it particularly hard to rotate the cam? (You would have to take the timing belt loose to check for tight cam rotation.)
