B20 in '59 PV544 444-544

I'm restoring a '59 PV544 and had a B20 built to go in it.

The front-end was already converted for a wider radiator and have purchased the later clutch shaft anchor.

I understand that the engine mounts are different. Does anyone have the details? Do I need the engine cross-member from a later car? Or is it just the engine mount brackets that I need?

Thanks.

I swapped a B20 into my PV444 about 15 years ago. Long time ago to bring back memories but I seem to recall uning B18 motor mounts in front and no change to crossmember by transmission. The bushing in the mount there s off center and can be rotated to adjust things (as I recall). Looking forward to hearing the real scoop from those who are "current".

Unfortunately, you can't install the B18 crossmember because the B16 idler arm for the steering is mounted to the B16 crossemember. When Volvo updated the 544/P210 for the B18, 1 of the changes was to move the idler arm to the right frame rail.

IIRC, you can use the B16 motor mount brackets, but you'll have to slot the mounting holes in the crossmember.

It's easier if you use the motor mount brackets from a B18 544/P210.

FYI, although it's hard to tell and they usually aren't marked, the motor mount brackets aren't the same side to side.

Thanks for the helpful info.

I have some motor mounts with a collection of PV parts I purchased. Any idea if these any of these are the left or right motor mounts for a B18?

Alternatively, does anyone have a source? Skandex.de makes new ones, but shipping makes them quite pricey.

Thanks.

Use the upper brackets from the photo - those are original to the B16 but will bolt right onto the B18/20 block. The engine will drop right into place.

I didn't slot the holes in the crossmember on either of our PVs when converting to B20 engines. It's tight, but it all fits.

1960 PV544 conversion to disc brakes 444-544

A previous owner dropped a B18 in my '61 using the B18 motor mounts and slotted the cross member. The engine sat funny...not even parallel to the driveshaft. I removed the engine, welded up the slot (he only slotted one side) to the original hole and sourced some B16 mounts. As Cameron noted, they bolt right up to the B18 (or B20)and restored the correct alignment.

I think the 2 motor mount brackets at the bottom of your picture are for PVs with a B18/B20.

I didn't know Skandix offers new B18 motor brackets for PVs, so I checked it out and you're right.

Thanks for the info!

The Skandix motor mounts have the promise to be superior with the reinforcement on the right-side mount. Are these prone to failure? Or only if you race the car?

It's hard to justify $275 for a pair of engine mounts unless there is a good reason.

Thanks.

My right side motor mount is broken right now.

I have read of a brace for the right side of the motor, but I also read that it tore up the inner fender.

My plan is to replace the mounts with some larger oner from an Amazon I think.
