940 with no instrument cluster: Will it run and drive? 900

If I remove my instrument cluster to repair the speedometer, will I still be able to start and drive the car? I may need time to order parts once I inspect it.

(Signal from differential is good. I suspect bad caps. Was intermittent for a while. Now dead.)

Hi Eddystone,

It should run OK without the cluster.
If it's a turbo, plug the vac boost hose with a golf tee.

There is a fuse in the +12 volt leg from D4 to the speedo

Check for bad solder joints (continuity) in the legs:
D4 to the + terminal of the speedo
D1 to the S+ terminal of the speedo
D2 to the S- terminal (Gnd) of the speedo
A2 to the S- terminal (Gnd) of the speedo

D = 4 pin connector in back of the speedo
Leave your email address if you want the info from the wiring manual.

Pay attention to possible bad through hole solder connections
where the track leaves one side of the PCB and goes along on the other side
and returns through another joint to travel on the top again.
I had to solder a jumper between a short segment of the fuel gauge PCB track
between two of these through-hole PCB connections to fix a ratty fuel gauge.

Good luck, Bill

Hi Eddystone,

Did you fix it?
Please report your findings to help the next guy.

Bill
