Alternator options 444-544

Some years ago someone posted that they had replaced their generator with a small single wire alternator from a Japanese car. I beleive they said that it was a virtual bolt-in using the existing bracket.
I have searched the archives to no avail. Can anyone enlighten me?

Why not use a 740 alternator. They last forever (215K miles before new brushes in my experience) and are easy to repair.

They used to be plentiful and cheap in salvage yards.

I think that they are available in 60 or 100 AMP versions.

    I just thought I would add a follow-up:
It works great and puts out a steady 14.2 volts.
I decided to remake the mounting bracket as he material I had used seemed flimsy.
I went with 1/8"" mild steel 3" x 8" and shortened the 2- 1/4" to 2.0" as this gives the option of shimming to align the pulleys. Also using a longer mounting
bolt with a 1" long spacer makes access to the locking nut much easier.
Anyone wanting to do the conversion can contact me for drawings and measurements.

Info on wiring in the charge light if you haven't managed that yet.

Thanks to Dean's info, I was able to proceed and do the conversion.
The new unit is half the size of the generator and looks like a factory fit. there is no "idiot light" but it is a simple matter to add a hidden digital voltmeter.

How to install one wire mini Denso type one wire alternator on a Volvo B18.

First disconnect the wiring and remove the existing 12 volts Bosch generator, the wiring will not be required for the new installation, just tuck it away out of sight.

Next, remove the generator bracket from the engine block together with the mounting bolts and vibration bushings. You will need to make a new bracket, longer in the front, to hold the mini unit and align the pulley.
{Use the bracket as a template for the shape and hole sizes / location on the new bracket, the rear mounting point is not needed.} I used a piece of hardened steel, approx. 8.5” long, and bent the front right angle so that the measurement from the front bracket hole center to the front face of the alt. mounting right angle was 2.5”

Be sure to shape the right angle lower part the same as original, so that it does not interfere with the bottom radiator outlets or hose.
The Alt. mounting hole needs a ⅜” clearance bolt hole. Secure the Alt. with a ⅜”x 1 ¾” fine thread bolt, washers and locknut.
My choice was a Denso 1 wire 35 amp mini alternator from DB Electrical. Part # 400- 52062 It works perfectly. The DB folks were a pleasure to deal with and the price was good.

Higher outputs are available, but some may require additional ignition inputs.

Don't know if you were able to but best to get the proper matching plug for the Denso if you can. Push on female connectors don't look good and are liable to be unreliable.

      Thanks for your reply.
I am familiar with Ron's site, and his conversion kits.
I am just curious about the possibility of a direct workable swap.

Ten years ago I installed a small 35Amp denso style alternator. Yes that sounds like its not enough amperage but I have never noticed a problem with voltage going below 13 or so while driving so I think its adequate. If I recall, it was a direct bolt on though I might have had to drill out the lower "mounting ear" and used a spacer on the mounting bolt. The part number was AND0212 from DBElectrical.

There are many others out there that are similar. Just google "New Mini Alternator 30A Denso Style 12V CW 1 Groove Pulley". At least one result on Amazon says it replaces AND0212. There are also some higher amp options but I am not sure if the mounting formats are identical.

          Dean,
I'm glad it wasn't my imagination, at my age on can can never tell!
I like to stay original as far as possible, but I drive my car a lot and
          like the peace of mind modern technology brings. {Pertronics ignition comes to mind.}
          Many thanks for your help.
          Pete.
