thump, thump thump on acceleration 120-130

My 68 122 (with auto trans) is makkng a momentary thump, thump thump sensation when accelerating after a complete stop. The drive shaft support retainer was replaced, but NOT the driveshaft bearing. The drive shaft was reinstalled but the vibration is still occuring. It only lasts for approx 2 to 3 seconds.

Unfortunately, while removing drive shaft we failed to take note of the U joint alingment while separating the shaft spline.

Any recommendations, resolutions, comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

    Preface - This is a long shot as I don’t know 120’s…

My 90 240 with AW70 automatic transmission had a similar issue. In that car it was the transmission tailshaft bushing. This is located where the driveshaft bolts to the transmission. The rear tailshaft seal leaks ruining the rubber bushing. Can you tell where you feel the vibration? If towards the front of the driveshaft it could be the transmission mount or perhaps the tailshaft bushing if your car has one.

This may not apply to your car, but I notice a thump-thump-thump when accelerating heavily in a low gear. This is in a 1967 wagon/combo/222S.

I tentatively attribute it to an old rubber bushing at the front end of the right torque tube running forward from the axle. The bushing has an unusual rectangular cross section, and appears to allow metal to metal contact under heavy load. Just a suggestion something similar could be worth checking on yours.

All of the workshop manuals show the relationship of the 2 halves of the prop shaft. Be careful how you interpret the pictures. You may only have to take out the rear section to correct it if wrong but I would change the centre bearing anyway. Not expensive. Checking the UJ's is best done with the prop shaft off as you can then move the joints through their full range by hand. The rearmost one is the usual troublemaker.

Check the u-joints to see if 1 is seized or has play.

    Also check the transmission mount.
