HELP...HOW TO CONVERT 240 WAGON TO NON-ABS BRAKES

Hello all,

I have a 1991 240 wagon that has a bad front right ABS caliber. I have searched everywhere and now know that the chance of finding a rebuilt 240 ABS caliber is next to none. There are European after-market ones for over $230.00 dollars, but my concern is what if my other 3 ABS calipers need replaced.

Rather than continuing the hunt for re-manufactured or the super high prices of European aftermarket 240 ABS calipers, I would like to simply delete the ABS system all together and keep my beloved 240 on the road as a non-ABS.

Can anyone please provide a step-by-step instruction on how to delete the 240 ABS system or even better a video of how to do it. If so, will I be able to use my other ABS calipers that are fine when I delete the ABS and replace the bad caliper?

Thanks

HELP...HOW TO CONVERT 240 WAGON TO NON-ABS BRAKES

A few thoughts: It’s your call, but in my humble opinion I wouldn’t convert your ABS brakes to a non-ABS system. Obviously, the most economical solution is to overhaul the caliper yourself. Not a horribly difficult job. You might consider giving it a try. It is a lot less work than converting your whole brake system to non-ABS.

Another option for you is to find a local mechanic willing to rebuild the caliper for you. More expensive, but still simpler than converting. Once the caliper is rebuilt or replaced thoroughly flush your brake system and refill with fresh fluid. That will minimize the chances of another caliper needing to be replaced.

One final important point. ABS brakes are safer than non-ABS brakes. They’ve saved my derrière a number of times when they didn’t lock up in an emergency braking situation. Especially in snow! That in itself makes them worth a little more expense!

Where are you purchasing the rebuild kits for Volvo calipers?

HELP...HOW TO CONVERT 240 WAGON TO NON-ABS BRAKES

Hi Randy. I used to always go for the Volvo seal kits, but these have been NLA for years. For quite a few years now I've been getting my caliper seal kits from RockAuto, with Raybestos being my preferred brand, but others are likely of similar quality. Finding them in-stock can be variable. Check part numbers as many ways as you can to assure fitment, mm diameter being the critical spec. I've not had an order problem other than the number of seals in the picture not matching the listing and I got a free set from them.

Re-building calipers with new seals isn't a big chore once you master the basics of popping the pistons (on the bench with a bicycle pump and tapered plastic adapter, compressed air rarely needed), inspecting for rust/scuffing/scoring to see if you need a better piston (good used is fine) and needing to press them back in perfectly square (a 6" C-clamp my preferred weapon for the 700/900 front single piston calipers), using brake fluid for lubricant in the process and knowing how to mInimize the mess and fluid loss from the lines.

I've successfully re-built at least 10 Volvo calipers over the years, one needed a new piston I got from a yard, one needed a new bleeder, and one recent one I botched putting it back together in a rush and tore a new seal, soon evidenced by brake fluid on the floor overnight and I instantly knew what I'd done.

HELP...HOW TO CONVERT 240 WAGON TO NON-ABS BRAKES

Thanks for the referral. I haven't rebuilt any Volvo calipers. I did, however, rebuild the front calipers on a few Honda 750's. For whatever reason they seemed to get sticky after being laid up over winter.

Thanks so much for your reply. I guess I'm just worried that many of the ABS parts are not going to be available. There is 235,000 miles on the car, but I do not want to give it up. I thought the non ABS would be easier to get parts for. I did find a rebuilt caliber for $257.00 dollars.

This is a good, very reputable source for used Volvo parts. Might be helpful someday. Some used parts can be overhauled (as needed) after purchase such as brake calipers.
