windshield replacement 200 1992

Tree fell on my 240 windshield.
Am having great difficulty locating a windshield.
Anyone know a source?

    Hi,

I have recently had three of them changed by a local mobile service to San Luis Obispo Ca. area.
I did this over the last two years and he only had problems getting one that didn’t have defects in them as they are all from China.
His source was in Sacramento Ca.
He would just send them back and lo and behold the next one two out of three times was just fine.

I believe he said they were 403 number windshields.
On your car you will get a new all around rubber gasket and I think they may come in two different widths.
I recall that being said by a fellow Brickster a few months back.
On my 1991 I was able to use the standard rubber but I had to repair the pinch weld area for rust using POR 15’s putty and paint.
I covered it with SEM flat black trim paint because it became wider than any gasket would ever cover.
The car is a dark gray metallic so that’s all it looks like as being a with a wider black facing to the roof.
Not worth trying to put any two stage matching metallic color for that small of an area IMHO.

The other two windshields were on older cars than your 1992.
    Mine were ‘84 and a ‘86.
he was able to use the old rubber and chrome trim again with urethane sealer under them.
It was a fight for him but he was a long time older installer and was willing to work. He knew three windshields would be worth doing.

I think he got his windshields for about $90 each as he sold me one to hold in case there were more problems getting them. Most of my cars are 600 miles away and he isn’t that mobile! 🤭
He said they were sort of scarce but by the time he got to replacing them he said they were easily found.
He works with his supplier and has done cash for years so they cater to his requests. Lots of body shops fold up overnight or in debt for specialized equipment.

Since you are in Texas, it is surely possible to find a windshield.
Just have get into the right network of installers of your local sources.
This guy just happened to being an install just down the street from where I lived during the winter months. I saw his mannerisms on someone else’s nickel, so I got his card. 😊

Guess you are lucky enough to have the tree only damage the windshield and not the body.

The whole thing with windshield repair people is they don’t do any type body work. They will just cover it up. That’s what happened to my 1991 with a female previous owner.
It took years for it to get worse as I try to keep my cars inside but I let it get too far.
You mention any rust and you will get waved off faster than a Navy pilot landing on an aircraft carrier!
More money is made in replacing whole car parts. It’s next to impossible to get a car totally repainted because they can slam/bam fenders and front/rear clips in less time.

Car Dealers even use mobile glass installers for their customers and mark that up!
That way they are not invested in aligning the cameras and interior sensors to the integrated windshields.
Look out if autonomous driving comes around.
    Mechanic or computer geek?

It’s great planning that we have some simplicity to enjoy with our 240s.
Shop wisely and you will be fine.

    Phil

      Hi,

Just went and look for windshield company’s name.

      XYG.

      Dot 563 AS1 M650

      43R-001853

      TIS 2602-2556

Don’t know what it means but I thought it might help others down the road in sourcing.
I’m sure there are other makes as he did find three.
I believe they stayed the same for years and that why they are still available.

      Phil
