Pilot Bearing going bad? 200 83

Has anyone ever had a pilot bearing go bad? Is there any noticable noise that it will make?

Not a lot of noise but gears will be a swine to engage from rest 'cos the input shaft will move. I ignored this once and had the bearing lock onto the input shaft on a 164, took me two days to remove the gearbox. Most infrequent fault however
