Manual tranny oil 200 88

dumb question........ATF in my manual trans.? Owners manual says so, just need to get that confirmed because I just put Amsoil ATF in there. Put Amsoil 80w90 in the rear-end too. They both got a little quieter.

Here's a tip, when changing trans and gear oil get one of those cheap [$2.50] bellows type hand pumps that are used for kerosene heaters, the kind you squeeze. Cut the feed tube so it fits nicely into the bottle and then filler-up with nothing spilled in your face.

It took me a lot of thunkin' to come up with that so if sombody else thunked it first please don't tell me.....my wife is real impressed with me right now.

Thanks for the tip about refilling the transmission. I was just looking at the location of that fill hole on my M46 and wondering how I was going to get 2.4 quarts up there.

Yep synthethic ATF will work great in that M46. As recommended. (Also Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 gear oil works good, too - that's what I got's in mine)

Re: Manual tranny oil 200 88

I followed Paul's advice, and put the Series 2000 in my '84 244 Turbo about two months ago.

It's been great. I've regularly seen temperatures of 102 and 25 degrees F since then, here in Colorado. I was cautious and skeptical at the start, but the OD seems to like it, shifting is smoother, and the car seems very content.

Now, my question is, how often to change this synthetic? 10K? 20K?

BTW, I put the regular Amsoil 10w20 in both my Volvo and my '98 Jeep Wrangler 4.0l. Immediately, the jeep ceased a low-rpm valve clatter that it had. It runs very well.

I just ordered six more quarts of the Series 2000 gear oil to convert the Jeep's transfer case, and diffs to synthetic, too.

Seriously no need to change even at 100K but you can if it makes you feel better. Really, this application puts no stress on a synthetic lube. Of course change if contaminated or somebody else has been driving the car without the clutch :)

Paul:

So which would be best for my two high mileage M46s (one in a '79 242 GT, the other in an '85 245 DL, both with over 200K) which won't ever see cold weather operation here in Florida?

For sure Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 SYNTHETIC gear oil....don't try this with dino gear oil or you'll be in deep yogurt. I've been running Amsoil in my 85 in the great NW and it works great!

Re: Manual tranny oil 200 88

It should be an M47.

There's also a technique of jacking up one side of the car to over fill the transmission to make sure you have sufficient lubrication, which can be a problem with the M47. I don't remember which side of the car you need to raise, but I'm sure someone here knows.

Michael:

Simple, you lift the side with th filler plug so you can "overfill".

Re: Manual tranny oil 200 88

Raise the driver's side. You can get nearly 2 quarts in there. I used a pump made for filling trannys which consists of a bottle pump (like a soap dispenser) and several feet of clear tubing. Got it for about $5 at the parts store. Takes a lot of pumps, but no mess.

I like my Redline MTL so far.

Re: Manual tranny oil 200 88

Yeah I didn't look at the year. Actually, with an M47 all the more reason to use the Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 gear oil...better protection and no OD cold situations to worry about.....but really not a problem, my OD is working great even with the cold temps.......ain't synthetics great!?
