steering rack change problems 200 1982

Hello,

I just installed a used steering rack on my 82-240. Everything went well, but now the steering wheel is upside down. How do I remedy this?

Should I remove the steering wheel and rotate it 180 degrees? Or should I take the u-joint out, take it apart, and turn one of the links 180 degrees?

Or is there something that Im over looking?

Thanks

ps, if steering wheel removal is recommended, what size is the nut holding the steering wheel on?

Cheers!

When you have the front end alligned, ( you didn't?) the steering wheel should come back to normal. If it didn't then (well,,, you already fixed it) when you do get the front end alligned, you'll probably have to do it again.

Your chances of getting the toe set to specs is....near zero.

Re: steering rack change problems 200 1982

Lawrence,

I just swapped my son's old wheel for a new (used) on his 83 244 Turbo. A standard 1 and 1/16" deep socket did the trick. Be carefull prying loose the center/horn cover. It's held in at four coners with a snap-on connections. Don't break them as you remove the cover ... gently pry them loose. Good luck.

Easiest is probably to remove the steering wheel. Re nut size, dont know, but I always have used the old trial and error. Hopefully you have a set of sockets, deep preferred, to play with.

Re: steering rack change problems 200 1982

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, Im gonna go with the steering wheel. I was worried that the wheel only went one way.

Its strange. I dont understand why the racks dont just bolt up all the same. I had the same trouble doing my 78. The steering wheel is still upside down. I got used to it. But this one is my daugthers car and I want it to be right.

Thanks

Re: steering rack change problems 200 1982

The relative position changed because the steering rack probably wasn't

centered when it was installed. Then you had to move the steering shaft

to make the connection to the rack so the position changed. The steering

wheel is removed with a 27mm deep socket. Its not a problem, just make

sure the toe adjustment is set first then remove the wheel to put it

on the right way.

Re: steering rack change problems 200 1982

Hello,

I picked up the 27mm socket this morning. Steering wheel came off without a problem. Im back in business!

For discussion sakes though, I dont believe it was possible for everything to line up properly, without changing something. The rack was not the original equipment. It came from a later model car, and regardless of which way I look at it , the steering wheel is upside down whenever the wheels are straight ahead. Perhaps Im missing something, but I think the rack was designed for a slightly different environment?

My hats off to volvo though. Even with some of the difficulties, there car is still the easiest to work on. I get the feeling that "real" people made this car, for real people.

Last month I put a rack on a ford escort. It two days to get it out. Two days to get it in again. The volvo was out and back in again in about 2 hours!

Thanks

Re: steering rack change problems 200 1982

Hello Lawrence,

Thats what I meant, also. I have changed a couple of racks and it always

seems necessary to reset the wheel by taking it off to center it. Yes,

they are easy racks to change. I wonder how the new front wheel drive

volvos are? hehehe.
