Is my brake-booster going downhill? 140-160 72

Good day,

After all that brake work done... my brakes seem to be good now. But my machanic thinks that my booster is starting to leak cause we have already installed a remose check-valve and it's getting good vacuum. Sometimes the brakes feel real nice and good, but sometimes is stiff as a rock, where I need my pretty much of my body weight to stop the car. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

Is there brake fluid in your booster?

Could your filter (around where the actuating rod comes into the

back of the booster) be stopped up so air pressure can't get in

to push the diaphragm when the other side is evacuated?

Hello.

The master is always full. And the booster seems pretty clean...but that could be a point about the filter at the back of the booster because the idle doesn't go higher when I step on the brakes... I'll check that tomorrow morning.

Thanks!

Re: Is my brake-booster going downhill? 140-160 72

Anthony,

I have found on my 72 144E that a high/hard pedal is a loss of vacuum in the booster. Out of three boosters, the check valves are usually OK. I have found that the seals at the front of the pushrod are more likely the culprit. You can remove the master from the booster without disconnecting the brake lines but you do have to remove a bracket. The seal is between the master and the booster. Unfortunately these seals are difficult to find new. I have made my own out of gasket material and they are holding up well after 6 months. I did have to make and use two gaskets to get a better seal. Also check the seal at the back end of the booster. This requires removing the booster from the car.

Good Luck

Thom H.
