Re: Is my brake-booster going downhill? 140-160 72

Anthony,

I have found on my 72 144E that a high/hard pedal is a loss of vacuum in the booster. Out of three boosters, the check valves are usually OK. I have found that the seals at the front of the pushrod are more likely the culprit. You can remove the master from the booster without disconnecting the brake lines but you do have to remove a bracket. The seal is between the master and the booster. Unfortunately these seals are difficult to find new. I have made my own out of gasket material and they are holding up well after 6 months. I did have to make and use two gaskets to get a better seal. Also check the seal at the back end of the booster. This requires removing the booster from the car.

Good Luck

Thom H.
