Front Wheel Bearings 700 90

I keep reading about installing new wheel bearings in my 90 hubs, but I'm a little confused as to how to adjust these new bearings. I'm used to tightening the nut until there's some resistance and then backing off a tiny bit (I always check the movement of the big washer.) On the other hand, I've also read that I should just torque the nut down! Which is it? The old way, or some predetermined torque value? Thanks.....

I replaced both sides, inner and outer bearings, after driving though a flood. I bought the bearings from a Volvo Dealer, and each side came as a kit with bearings, seals, a tube of grease, and a great set of instructions. On another Volvo I bought bearing from an industrial bearing house and 1/3 the cost you get only the bearings and you still need the rest of the stuff. you must know how to remove a nd replace the bearing races and how to hand-pressure the grease into the bearing. Get a good manual, it's an eazy greazy job and the torque specs will be listed. Good Luck, Bob

On 88 and later 700 series the stub axles are noticeably heavier and the updated hub functions as the outer bearing race. Some brickboarders report that the bearings in some of these hubs can be replaced, but I have no experience with this. The installation procedure is to use a new nut and torque to 74ft-lbs (100Nm), and then tighten and additional 45 degrees.
