Help with a 245Ti! 200 1984

Hello everybody!

In the process of getting my 245T ready to be a daily driver I have ran into trouble. When I got it, it had a bad engine wire harness, the exhaust gasket for cylinder #4 was broken, motor/tranny mount bad and other little things to fix. By now, I have replaced gaskets at exh. manifold, oil cooler adapter, intake mani (did B23/230 manifold change)and throttle body. Did motor mounts, installed an intercooler and bypass valve. Here are the problems:

1.- While disassembling the car, I drained the cooling system. I opened the drain cock on the turbo side near the firewall and I was surprised that no coolant came out.I removed the lower radiator hose to drain the engine. I replaced the thermostat which was stuck closed since the lower part had broken off. Replacing the thermostat did no fix the problem. I noticed that the engine seemed to be running hot while the temperature meter on the instrument panel showed lower than normal operating temp. Now even with the no thermostat installed, still no coolant comes out when the cock is opened. It looks than an section on the cooling system is blocked or coolant is leaking inside the engine, although I have not found any coolant in the oil and the car is not pouring white smoke while running. Any hints of what could be wrong? I am suspecting a bad head gasket.

2.- As I mentioned above, I replaced the original B21FT intake with the one from a B230FT and the engine wire harness was replaced with one off an '83 240T which was in good shape. Now the car has an idle of 2000 RPM. I installed new gaskets and o-rings on the throttle body and manifold, but I did not seal the LH-injector holes, instead, I left these injectors in place. What would cause a high idle? air entering the system around the manifold/throttle body? An error in reconnecting the wire harness or vaccum lines? The car ran fine before this change, so I am not blaming the air control valve for this problem yet. The throttle plate closes well. And I replaced the seals on both sides of the shaft in the Throttle body. Any hints?

3.- This is the last one. Since the B230 manifold has more vaccum fittings, I dedicated one for the timing advance at the distributor. This fitting is located after the throttle plate. Will this cause the high idle, meaning that the advance has to be connected before the TB plate?

This is a long post and I feel like I am abusing your good faith, but I would like to get this car running well ASAP and I am looking forward to driving this car everyday. As always thank you very much for your replies.

Re: Help with a 245Ti! 200 1984

Hello Angel,

I'll make some suggestions, hope they help.

1. When I first drained my engine and I used the drain cock on the side

of the block. Mine was clogged. I removed the part of the fitting that

you loosen and probed in there. It was clogged with the sealer stuff

that you can use to seal your radiator. Maybe yours has some corrosion

or this stuff in there. Just use a piece of hanger wire and carefully

probe the fitting. Whatever is clogging it you'll see.

2. When you were working on the throttle body section did you use the

B23/230 throttle body or the original one? If you used the B23/230 one

then you must modify the throttle position switch. It needs a wire switched

inside it to provide the correct signal to the CIS. As I recall Stu Spencer

has a nice write up about this on his web page. You can get to it from

Turbobricks.

3. You cannot use the vacuum ports on the manifold for the distributor.

The distributor uses vacuum that changes as you rev the engine. The ports

on the manifold have constant vacuum. You must use the small hose connection on the throttle body. This is the small hose that goes to the

charcoal canister under the fender.

Sounds like your close. Wish you well.

Re: Help with a 245Ti! 200 1984

Hey Dave and Angel,

Along those same lines re the intake swap,is the throttle position switch the only change in the setup of the new manifold?Ive studied Stu's instructions and still feel I wont get the vacuum lines right.

Im intercooling my 83 and was considering just putting the b21 intake back on,but I have the b230ft intake ready to go,with the holes filled. What else besides the tps, which I could have my repair shop resolder?Stu said something about the idle motor bracket.

Should I do the swap?

Thanks,

RR

Re: Help with a 245Ti! 200 1984

Hello RR

To mount the idle motor, if you are following Stu instructions, you will need the bracket that is used to mount it on your original manifold plus the mounting plate for the same idle motor and bracket off an earlier 240 with LH injection (non-turbo) a believe '81 or '82 240's. It's best to mount the idle motor/bracket/plate and hoses before you install the manifold. Make sure that the arrow on the idle motor points towards the engine, the idles motor circulates air around the throttle plate when this is closed. As far as the vaccum connections, label them and take note of the size of the hose. There are some that are obviuos. Be careful when bending the fuel injection lines, specially the one that connects to the cold injector. If you don't like that the cold inj. ends under the manifold, you can have the manifold machined to accomodate the injector above the vaccum ports, there is a space right for it. The problem that I had with hi-idle was caused by not adjusting the throttle linkage (duh!). As far as the benefits of the swap, there are quite a few fellas that say that is good, I have not been that lucky since my car has a partially blocked catalityc conv. that is keeping me from experience the full benefits of this mod. Good luck with your car.

Re: Help with a 245Ti! 200 1984

Hello,

Well, if you don't need the car right away. I would say take your time and

do the swap. Mine is planned for the nicer weather. Maybe in a month or

so. The idle motor will need to be remounted. If you check out the photos

Stu used the bracket from an 82 K-jet car and mounted the motor on the

side of the manifold. You could also make your own bracket pretty easy.

The K-jet idle motor bracket is a one year only part. You do want to mount

the motor with some type of vibration and isolation. Thats why the rubber

mounts. One of the other posts the guy used the turbo throttle body to

simplify the change over. I want to use the LH throttle body.

The only vacuum connection that needs special attention is the one for the distributor. This has to have ported vacuum. It should be teed into the

small vacuum line on the throttle body. Also if you have a 83 or older

with the vacuum connections to the CPR then you also need to connect to

the same spot with that. The newer 84-85 turbos don't use that type of

CPR. All the folks that have done the change report positive results.

A smoother idle and more power. One of the posts I read said 10 hp. I

don't know about 10 but any help is good. Happy Rolling!

Re: Help with a 245Ti! 200 1984

Hello everybody!

Dave, Thanks. I will be checking the car again this evening. I am using the B230 TB, so I will change the distributor advance to the right place. Thanks again, I will post the results.
