Car died--not fuel relay 200 90

My daughter was driving yesterday when the car died, with no previous indication of any problem. The car cranks fine, but when I turn the key I don't hear the fuel pump doing it's initial run. I have checked the fuses, including the 25 amp fuse under the hood and all are fine. I pulled the fuel pump relay and it looked fine as well. Cleaned up the connectors and re-installed; it tests OK and I can hear it click when I crank the motor. I did an initial fault check and had no codes. I plan to dig into it a bit more this weekend, but wonder if anyone has a suggestion on where to start. (so to speak)

Re: Car died--not fuel relay 200 86

The last day of school (before Christmas break) I stopped to pick my son up at school, went in ,spoke with teacker etc...It was 08f and wind chill about -40f. When I came out (10 mins) and started car, I felt something amis...

Car would run, but when dropped into gear (auto) would die. Restarted...

died again. Restarted...would not respond to accelerator. Died again, restarted...missing...sputsputspitt, revved a little, died with a shudder.

Prior to this , absolutely nothing, except on last tank of gas, ran sluggish on last 1/4 tank. Also noticed guage read HIGHER just before I put 9 gallons fuel in. Thought it was just the weather, since it had been subzero for several days. Fuel was well below half, again when this happened. Ended up towing the car home, found lots of preasure on fuel rail, no fuel. Fuel pump relay working, and voltage getting to pump. Pump in the tank not making ANY noise, but could hear splashing inside the tank with voltage on the circuit. Remeber, this is a 15 year old car with 160k miles on it, that I have only owned for a couple of years...

Time to pull the sending unit/fuel pump out of the tank...

Found pump only operating about 10%, sock clogged with God only knows what and the highly deteriorated, extremely thin walled bellows tube between the pump and the feed pipe, blown completely out. I ad already anticipated the in-tank fuel pump being at fault, and purchased one for $41.00 (tax iincl) from O'Reilleys (Carter brand as replacement vs. AC)

Took about 1.5 hrs to fix, and Jason at Georges (THE Volvo store) had estimated $200.00 to fix...So it could be anything....you have to check it all

Re: Car died--not fuel relay 200 90

You can run a wire from the positive terminal to the plus side (yellow) of the fuel pump. If you don't hear it spin, you pumps bad, if you do hear it, try and start it. If it starts then you can see why you aren't getting 12 volts from the relay down to it.

Re: Car died--not fuel relay 200 90

Tim,

My experience with the 240 series stops with the 1989 model, but are you sure the pumps are supposed to cycle in your car? My experience with the 740 series begins at 1990 and I know they do.... but I digress.

Just because it is clicking doesn't mean it is delivering the goods. I would take a test light or meter and connect it to the wires currently on your fuel pump. Crank it over and see if you have 12volts at the pump.

Randy

check for spark 200 90

if no spark, could well be ignition amplifier.
