Exhaust interchange? 200 81->84

Dead '81. Nice exhaust (manifold back).

Nice '84. Dead exhaust.

Different motors, same exhaust manifold.

Can I swap?

"Different motors..."

Thus B21 and B23, not B21FT.

I'd say yes, though I think components are different (cat flanges, for example).

Anyway, it's an experiment you should report once you try. You do the work, we get the knowledge.

Yup. What? Me? Turbo?

I agree, Don. I'm off to the driveway.

Re: Exhaust interchange? 200 81->84

Good. Three nuts (not counting the one on his back), two big rubber bands, and two big mutha grommets and the entire system's on the ground, intact.

If the car's high enough, you can wiggle it out.

If the other car's high enough, you can wiggle it in.

If the gasket's solid, reuse it with a light coating of red RTV on each side.

Don't forget to slobber some never-seize on the nuts 'n studs.

The whole thing should cost $0, my favorite sum.

Re: Exhaust interchange? 200 81->84

No gasket at all :) Gotta buy one.

There were only 2 nuts holding the '81 system to the manifold :)

And here's a thing: the donor car is an M46 and the recipient is an AW70. Haven't looked at the recipient yet. What should I expect in terms of the big wire loop at the bellhousing?

The system in the recipient car will come out in chunks. I can get the cars about 17" off the ground - that's the limit of my floor jack. Think that'll be high enough?

"No gasket at all :) Gotta buy one."

Evan? You feeling OK? You're gonna buy something?

"There were only 2 nuts holding..."

Hurry off to the dealer and BUY one nut. Geesh!! Can't you figure out how to get a free nut? Won't the donor car have an extra? (Remind me to never park near you at the mall. I'll lose my nuts, so to speak.)

"What should I expect in terms of the big wire loop at the bellhousing?"

No gasket, missing nuts, and you're worried about the big wire loopy thingy? You should expect that it, too, is gone. But Murphy's Law says it'll be there. Since it connects at the bellhousing, the mount's the same regardless of transmission.

"The system in the recipient car will come out in chunks."

Split it at a convenient cat flange. If the flange gasket's decent, you can reuse it with a dab of red RTV.

"...about 17" off the ground - that's the limit of my floor jack. Think that'll be high enough?"

Gotta talk to Ringlee -- he said something about Viara for Jacks....
