Dome Light Door Switch Mystery 900 94

My 94 940 has a problem with the dome light switch. The switch will not turn off the dome light when the button is pushed in, but it WILL turn off the "Key in ignition chime". Shouldn't both stop working if the switch is bad. I removed the switch and sanded the contacts, but no help. Do I need a new switch or is there something I am missing?

Does the light stay on constatly? I believe there is a delay and light stays on for a few seconds, then shuts off. Presumably this is so you can find the ignition switch at night.

Yes, it will stay on constantly. They passenger side switch makes the dome light go off immediately. I would think the switch is either good or bad...not working on the ignition chime but not on the dome light.

Thanks.

Re: Dome Light Door Switch Mystery 900 94

I believe I had this problem once. If I remember correctly, when you pull the switch out there are 2 wires going to it. You would think that the 2 wires are part of the same circuit going to and from the switch. However, the 2 wires are from 2 different sources.....the dome light and the ignition chime. In order to complete the each circuit circuit the switch must be screwed to the body thus grounding it.

I figured this out when I took the 2 wires and jumpered them together to see if I had a bad switch. When I did that nothing happened. But if I jumpered either wire to the body (ground) the light or ignition chime circuit was completed and the light/chime worked.

Therefore you could have the dome light side of the switch NOT working and still have the ignition side of the switch working. Make sure the screw that mounts to the body is not rusty as well as the switch base in which the screw goes through.

Hope this makes sense and I hope my memory was correct on this issue.
