Odometer/Trip Meter Woes 200 1987

Speedometer works fine - trip meter and odometer have stopped. Checked the "tiny gears", all were fine. Replaced entire instrument cluster with a spare - same problem. Thoughts?

hi guys-

i am in the same boat. odometer quit but speedo works. i just bought a replacement and will try to swap it in. is it a pretty straightforward job? i've never tackled instrumentation before, and would appreciate any advice. will post if the swap works.

are you sure the replacement OD was functional? good luck.

Re: Odometer/Trip Meter Woes 200 1987

On my list of week end maintenance is checking the wiring from the rear axle housing up to that wonderful electric speedo. I have no o/d and a speedo that works on whimsy. An earlier post explained that there is a connecting wire from the rear axle sensor to a point en route to the dash, and this could by my culprit, maybe yours, too.

Good Luck,

Bob

Re: Odometer/Trip Meter Woes 200 1987

Hi BC! Checked all those types of things immediately. But if the wiring were broken from the pick-up on the rear would not the speedometer be "dead" also? Went all through the latest posts (as well as the archives) and checked everything mentioned but to no avail. That's why I went so far as to swap out my instrument cluster with my spare. The same problem exists so that's what leads me to believe that my issue is the signal (or lack of) to the odometer/trip meter. There are two wires coming out of the sender in the differential (both intact and connected), is one of these for the speedometer and the other for the odometer/trip meter or is this just the conventional +/- electrical set up? Went so far as to tracking/feeling the wiring harness up on top of the gas tank but felt no breaks anywhere. Any ideas where to go from here?

Re: Odometer/Trip Meter Woes 200 1987

Yeah, my answer was based on thinking that your speedo was out, too. If the speedo works, the signal in getting to it. My speedo does quit sometimes, thank heavens for the tach.

The o/d is, I think, driven from the speedo via a teeny plastic gear that fails and is apparently hard to repair/replace outside the VDO service store. The VDO place in Houston quoted me $200 to repair, in his shop. ! YUK ! With the brain power on this board I would have thought someone would have a way to fabricate a gear or a build-around of some sort.

Frankly, I'm as stuck as your are. I have been forced to estimate my two o/d challenged 240's at 1,000 miles a month, and doing the 3000 miles oil change etc. every quarter. Gas mileage is a dead issue.

Good Luck, and please post anything you find.

Regards,

Bob
