Stuck Crankshaft Pulley 700 1989

Hello,

I recently got a mint 1989 740GL. My first Volvo. After reading over the FAQ's, I got brave enough to atempt changing the timing belt and the three seals. (I have a lot of mechanical experience with MB Diesels).

Well, the "hard" part of removing the retaining bolt went smoothly. Now, I am stuck with the pulley on there, and I haven't a clue how to remove it. Pulling does me no good, and I don't want to pry with a screwdriver, fearing I will break the plastic shield behind it.

Help! What do I do here? Any tricks?

I even made a trip to the Checker a block away, and they don't have any tools that would help me.

Thanks,

Greg

Re: Stuck Crankshaft Pulley 700 1989

I have the face of my B230F all apart right now. Let me see if I can suggest something...

Penetrant & heat. That didn't help?

This is basically a smooth shaft and collar. Only thing is there is a small key on the camshaft gear that fits a slot in the back of the pully to keep it in time. IN other words, you won't be ale to turn the pully in order to break it loose.

Hammering on it with a rubber mallet may vibrate it loose without damaging anything.

Probably rusted on.

I used a gear puller to break it loose

use smallest one you can fit on, pull radiator first.
